McDonalds: ‘Would you like cadmium with that Happy Meal?’ Friday, June 4, 2010
The McDonald’s fast food chain says it will recall 12 million Shrek character glasses it has been selling as a promotional tie-in with the new “Shrek Forever After” movie because they contain cadmium, which can cause cancer as well as damage bones and internal organs, the Los Angeles Times reports today.
The recall apparently was sparked by an anonymous tip to Rep. Jackie Speier’s office, where her staffers decided to have some of the glasses tested. Cadmium was found in the paint used to depict four characters — Shrek, Fiona, Puss n’ Boots and Donkey – on the outside of the drinking glasses. Speier’s people got in touch with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which got in touch with McDonald’s which immediately agreed to recall the glasses.
While McDonald’s seems to have done the right thing once it was told of the problem, you have to wonder about quality control. As in, why did it take a secret tip to a congressional office to discover there was cadmium in paint on glasses marketed to children?
