File this under “pretzel logic” Thursday, March 18, 2010
John Eastman, the former dean of Chapman University‘s School of Law,* has filed the official papers for his run to replace Jerry Brown as California attorney general. He apparently wants to describe himself as an “assistant attorney general” — a designation that has more than a few people scratching their heads.
It turns out, Eastman got the title from South Dakota as a special designation for a case he’s handling for the state (hat tip to the Flash Report). So a guy who has been running a law school gets a one-time gig repping a different state and thinks that earns him the right to call himself an assistant attorney general while running for California attorney general.
For some reason, this old Steely Dan song comes to mind…
* I teach journalism part-time at Chapman, though to my knowledge have never crossed paths with Eastman.
